New Year’s Resolutions

My New Year’s resolution is to instill a personal tradition of taking great care of my mind, body, and spirit. Simply put: I don’t want life stress to “get to me;” I want to enjoy my work, my adorable Mount Pleasant home, and the great city I live in. As of January 1, 2012, I have decided that I need to focus my attention to taking good care of myself while I take care of others.

In anticipation of a stressful 2012, I am preemptively taking a stand: I will not fall idle to the pressures of perfection this year. I will be a beacon of strength and a model of poise for all who look at me and wonder: “How the heck does she do it?”

…and now I need to ask myself: “How the heck will I do it?!”

Well, I will let you in on a little secret – I am not planning on doing it alone. Where there is help to be found, I will embrace it! I will proudly accept advice, assistance, and admiration with open arms, an open heart, and an open mind…and I know just where to look:

The open and welcoming businesses that line the Mount Pleasant BIA (identifiable by the banners that line the sidewalks near their inviting doorways).

First on my list: GVC Credit Union in Kingsgate Mall. One of my gifts to myself this year is peace of mind when it comes to my personal banking. I have a strict plan to stay on budget this year and I need all the help I can get. With a couple of bucks in tow, I look forward to embarking on the next part of my To Do list: fun fitness!

Yoga on 7th  (156 East 7th Ave) has an excellent reputation. Plus, I love the convenience! Their schedule looks fantastic and I adore their proximity to a favourite lunch place called Rhizome Café (317 East Broadway). Hint: try their breakfast burrito with chipotle/cilantro rice, black beans, roasted zucchini, egg, cheese and tomato, and salsa verde!

Then, because I will probably need a little bit more “umph” to my wellness routine, I am going to tuck the name of a counseling office into my telephone directory. Stephanie Davis, M.A., RCC (8-245 East Broadway) offers courses and workshops centered around personal growth and mindfulness, and movement, dance, and creativity…it should be fun!

Last on the list (for this month, at least) is Broadway Pharmacy (1-3033 Main Street). To keep up my stamina and immune system, I think that multi-vitamins are a must for this year.

Take home message: Take care of yourself! It is cold out there and your family and friends need you to be at your best; you need you to be at your best. Give yourself a gift all year round and take care of yourself using all the health and service resources the Mount Pleasant BIA has in store.
